Monster Roll Review

Monster Roll
Directed by Dan Blank
Produced by Erich Lochner and Matt Miller
a cool dragon sea monster tattoo

The first really attention-grabbing thing in this film is the really cool dragon and tentacle tattoo shown on a person's back.
The sound of an ancient Japanese man kinda trope telling the story of how mankind disrespects the ocean gives the audience interest in the story, while light shadowing the part of the design with the people foreshadows the upcoming war between man and sea monster.
This film features an abundance of visual effects, including greenscreens and motion capture to overlay 3d generated images onto the film.  Textures for those 3d models were presumably designed in 2d using a tool such as Photoshop.
What moods or feelings are expressed in this film?
This film expresses both reverence for the ocean and disappointment with mankind's poor fishing practices in its opening sequence.  The later action sequences show anger and desire to protect one's people, but the reverence for the ocean remains.
Shadowing and dark lighting; dark, PETA-ad style filters; and stereotypes of Japan and Japanese culture were used to create this sense of respect for the ocean.  Dramatic music, fast cuts, and fast-moving computer generated tentacles created the anger and urge to protect.
Discuss how you believe CGI technology (2D and/or 3D) was used in two of the most impressive scenes from the film.  Use specifics from the film in a well written paragraph for each.
One notable sequence in the film is the first time a murderous sea monster appears and attacks a disrespectful sushi-eater.  A length of plastic tubing was used to simulate the monster's tentacle for the purposes of filming, and a computer-modeled tentacle was added in production.
Perhaps the most dramatic shot in the film features the hero running down a bridge wielding his massive knife before jumping into the jaws of a giant piranha.  The film's "Before/After VFX" reel shows that everything in this shot was added in production, and it was shot on a rock wall or low bridge without the inhuman jump.

Review of the Development of The Crew

I will be reviewing the development of Ubisoft's The Crew.  This game is interesting from a technological standpoint because of the hyper-realistic models and physics it makes use of.  The main change in technology that has made this game possible is the improvement in GPUs in the latest generation of games consoles, allowing more and more detailed models to be rendered and used at a higher frame rate for a more visually appealing game.  In addition to the 3D design used for the game's assets, the studio behind this game used cinematography for cutscenes and advertisements, 2D graphic design for textures and other assets as well as packaging and posters, sound design for game assets, and countless other areas of design.  This is certainly a career I could see myself working in, though potentially not in a 3D design aspect.  Programming would be more the path I could see working in specifically, but a studio such as this would be an excellent workplace for me.

Old Spice Super Bowl Commerical

I chose to review Old Spice's Super Bowl ad "Irresistible" because I enjoyed its comedy. The ad's message is, at its core, that using Old Spice will make you seductive, intriguing, and sexy; and will help you get beautiful women and fast cars. It's communicated straightforwardly, featuring a man wearing Old Spice Wolfthorn, and a woman who is "afraid. Then, I was seduced. Then intrigued. Then in the car."

The main design feature that made this ad interesting was the use of images to portray scent. In this case, the man had a pair of wolves riding on him, one on each shoulder, to show the smell of the new flavor of Old Spice. In the images I have selected above, the can of Old Spice is almost perfect center in the frame, and both characters are looking towards it. This highlights how important the Old Spice was to this timeless romance.

This commercial is an example of outstanding audio/visual communication in that it uses novelty combined with simple and powerful design techniques to portray its product in a positive light.
